CHICAGO ms society (Reuters) - A natural defense mechanism used by cells in the gut to neutralize harmful toxins would develop new ways to fight the bacteria ms society Clostridium difficile, the most common cause of hospital-acquired bacterial infections.
A group of US experts found promising ms society to perform ms society laboratory tests on mice with an experimental compound that mimics this defense mechanism results. The researchers plan to conduct clinical trials.
"This is an issue of 3,500 million dollars in the US alone and is growing rapidly due to the emergence of new, even more virulent strains," said Tor Savidge of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, whose study was published in Nature Medicine.
Savidge and colleagues from the University of California at Los Angeles, Case Western Reserve University, Tufts University and the Commonwealth Medical College said that to enter the cells lining the intestine, toxins produced by C. difficile need to decompose smaller pieces.
The C. difficile accomplishes this through a "molecular guillotine" known as cysteine protease, which is activated only when a molecule called InsP6 is present in high concentrations within a cell.
Savidge's team discovered that once you start this process, the body releases neutralizing chemicals that stop the molecular guillotine and prevent ms society toxins break down and damage the cells.
Mice with C. difficile who were treated with the experimental drug in sick less and were more likely to survive their infections than animals that received no treatment.
